Triumphal Arch

Another architecture study and design exercise, this time aimed at learning more about Roman architecture. I settled on the Triumphal Arch as the subject because it can really stand on its own as a design without many accompanying structures and it can incorporate a lot of the main aspects of the style, such as columns and archways. I started with sketching some thumbnails and then blocked out the arch in Blender to get initial shapes and lighting information, and then did line work, detailing and further refining of the design in Photoshop. To speed things up I grabbed some Roman ruin meshes from Megascans for the statues and capitals.

Quick front-view thumbnails I did for the arch to explore some shapes. I ended up refining the overall shape a lot more in 3D and didn't stick too closely to any one of these, but they greatly informed the initial direction.
